Project 4: Montage

By Tiffany Contreras

Description: This image is a spiritual montage, created on Adobe Photoshop with masking as its main edit.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I began this project by importing and enlarging the bigger photo of Jesus Christ in Adobe Photoshop to have as the background. I followed that by placing the smaller photo of The Savior with a child, and then I masked both photos and blended them together. I decreased the opacity to 30% and 40% in Photoshop to make the images blend more into the background, and then I switched to 100% to get rid of the hard edges. Following, I used a black paint and varied brush sizes to smooth the edges. Afterward, I added another layer for the text. I used Arrus BT Bold to give contrast to the words ‘I know the plans,’ by making them a bigger size than the rest of the font, as a way to symbolize that The Savior knows our lives and has every detail planned. I took out the bold to carry the rest of the message. I followed this by overlaying the entire text to blend with the background. When I finished the edits, I applied a sharpen filter to the larger image of the Savior. I applied that filter so that He would have the first main focus, and then have the text be the second focus.

Message: My message is to allow people to know that it’s okay to trust The Savior and to know that He already has our lives planned out; that if we rely on Him, He will not let anything happen to us. We are His children and He loves us. My hope is to get this message across to people who are having a difficult time in life.

Audience: My audience stems from children as young as 2 years old to adults up to 90 years old.

Top Thing Learned: I learned how to mask images with opacity and blend them to make the entire project appear as one image. I didn’t know about opacity prior to this project, and now I know how important it is when it comes to masking and blending images.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I applied the sharpen filter on the first layer – the larger image of The Savior – as well as colorization. I wanted Him to stand out as the big picture, overlooking His children. I believe this photo demonstrates that, as He looks at them with the text right next to His eyes. The sharpen filter enables that more than without.

  1. Your design is spiritually uplifting.Your color chose adds unity and makes the design flow really well. The blending of the text and pictures looks natural and soft. I like the placement of your text and how Jesus is looking toward the text which makes the eye draw to text. Overall your message is executed very well. If you could please check out my design on my blog here
